Syracuse Police Chief Joseph Cecile announced his retirement at the end of this year, concluding a distinguished career spanning over 40 years with the Syracuse Police Department. Chief Cecile, who has led the department since 2022, will retire on December 31, coinciding with the end of Mayor Ben Walsh's term. He was appointed as chief following the resignation of former Chief Kenton Buckner, who had served since 2018.

Cecile's career with the department began in 1985, and he rose through the ranks to become deputy chief in 2010 and first deputy chief in 2015. His leadership tenure was marked by a commitment to fostering internal talent, and he strongly advocates for his successor to be chosen from within the department. "We have some very, very talented people," Cecile said, emphasizing the capabilities of the department's personnel.

Cecile's retirement will set the stage for the next mayor to appoint a new chief, a decision that will be crucial in the transition period following the fall election. He expressed his willingness to provide insights to the incoming administration but noted he would not interfere unless asked. As Cecile prepares for retirement, he plans to enjoy life on the road with his wife, having already put down a deposit on an RV.
