Syracuse Police Chief Joseph Cecile announced that officers involved in a controversial arrest on Wednesday (April 9) will face discipline. The incident, captured on video and shared widely online, shows officers interacting with two men near New Salem Baptist Church. One officer is seen taking a man to the ground and handcuffing him, while another officer punches a second man in the head before handcuffing him.

According to CNY Central, Chief Cecile confirmed that department policy was violated and the involved officers will undergo retraining. The police department is conducting an internal investigation into the incident.

The arrest occurred after a traffic stop on South Avenue for vehicle and traffic violations. As reported by Syracuse.com, officers discovered that neither the driver, Jaumar Chandler, nor the passenger, Antal Tatum, had a valid driver's license. The situation escalated when Chandler allegedly spat in the direction of an officer, leading to his arrest. Chandler was charged with harassment and resisting arrest, while Tatum was charged with obstructing governmental administration and resisting arrest.

The video, which has sparked community outrage, shows several officers struggling with Chandler before he is struck. Chief Cecile stated that although the strikes were within department policy, some procedures were violated, as revealed by bodycam footage. The department is reviewing the incident thoroughly.

The community's response to the video has been one of anger and concern, with many questioning the officers' use of force. Syracuse Police are committed to addressing the situation and ensuring accountability within the department.
