Syracuse drivers will experience lane closures on Interstate 81 starting today (April 8) as part of the ongoing I-81 Viaduct Project. The New York State Department of Transportation announced that the highway will be reduced to one lane in both directions during weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through April 15.
Northbound traffic will face closures between the Interstate 690 westbound on-ramp and Exits 23-24B, while southbound lanes will be reduced between Exits 23A-23B-22 and Exit 20. These closures are necessary to facilitate striping work as part of the project.
The construction schedule is weather-dependent, meaning changes could occur based on conditions. Motorists are advised to drive cautiously through the work zones and adhere to traffic control devices. The New York State Department of Transportation reminds drivers that fines for speeding in work zones are doubled, and repeated violations could lead to license suspension.
The lane reductions are part of a larger effort to improve infrastructure and safety along I-81. Drivers are encouraged to plan for potential delays and consider alternate routes during this period.
