A gun buyback event is scheduled to take place in Syracuse on Saturday (April 12) at the St. Lucy's Church Gymnasium on Gifford Street. The event, organized by New York Attorney General Letitia James, the Syracuse Police Department, and the New York State Police, will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Participants can turn in firearms with no questions asked and receive compensation in the form of prepaid gift cards. According to CNY Central, the compensation amounts are $750 for an assault rifle, $250 for a handgun, $75 for a rifle or shotgun, and $25 for non-working, replica, antique, or 3D-printed guns. The event aims to reduce gun violence by removing firearms from the streets.
All firearms must be unloaded and transported to the site in the trunk of a vehicle, or in a plastic or paper bag or box. As reported by The Citizen, the event is part of an amnesty program, ensuring that no questions will be asked about the person surrendering the firearm. If a weapon needs to be removed from a permit, a photo ID and corresponding permit must be presented.
This initiative is part of Attorney General James' ongoing efforts to enhance community safety across New York. Similar events have been held in various locations, aiming to encourage residents to participate in creating safer environments.
