Aunamarie Mahnken, a 12-year-old girl from Central Square has died after being struck by a vehicle near Central Square Middle School on Route 11. The incident occurred during school dismissal last week. According to the New York State Police, Aunamarie was taken to Upstate Medical University Hospital in critical condition but sadly passed away from her injuries.
The driver involved in the accident cooperated with law enforcement and is reportedly not facing any charges. The investigation into the crash is still ongoing.
Aunamarie's passing has sparked calls for improved pedestrian safety measures in the community. Her family remembers her as "sweet, sassy, and kind-hearted" and shared that she loved art and dreamed of becoming an esthetician. In response to the tragedy, community members have initiated an online petition to enhance traffic safety near the school. Amber Tressler, a local mother, emphasized the importance of protecting children, stating, "These children are our future."
A moment of silence was observed for Aunamarie at a recent Central Square School Board meeting. Despite the low turnout, community members expressed their concerns about the safety of the intersection where the accident occurred. Sally Delamater, a long-time resident, urged for a stoplight to be installed to prevent future incidents.
Calling hours for Aunamarie will be held on Thursday (April 10) from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Traub Funeral Home in Central Square. Aunamarie's obituary notes that she donated her organs, leaving a legacy of hope for others.
