Syracuse Deputy Mayor Sharon Owens has received a significant endorsement in her campaign to become the city's next mayor. The New York Working Families Party (NYWFP) announced its support for Owens, a Democrat, citing her as a proven leader who stands up for the needs of New Yorkers amidst what they describe as chaos and dysfunction caused by President Trump. Owens is vying to replace current Mayor Ben Walsh, who is unable to run again due to term limits.

The endorsement is part of a broader effort by the NYWFP to back candidates committed to housing justice and other key issues. Co-Directors Ana María Archila and Jasmine Gripper emphasized their commitment to supporting candidates who are unafraid to advocate for the needs of Empire State residents. The party has also endorsed 23 other candidates for various local elections in Syracuse, including positions on the city council and school board.

The NYWFP's endorsement process involves a comprehensive questionnaire and interview to ensure candidates align with their values. As reported by CNYCentral, the party plans to continue screening additional candidates and will announce further endorsements in the coming weeks.

According to the Working Families Party, their efforts aim to ensure that local elected officials are equipped to protect communities and democracy, especially as the nation heads into a second Trump presidency. The party is actively working to support endorsed candidates through voter engagement and community outreach to secure their victories in the upcoming elections.
