In the race to become the next mayor of Syracuse, three more candidates have submitted their petitions. On Tuesday (April 1), Democrats Pat Hogan and Chol Majok, along with Republican Tom Babilon, filed their signatures with the Onondaga County Board of Elections. Hogan and Majok join Deputy Mayor Sharon Owens in the contest for the Democratic nomination, while Babilon remains the sole Republican candidate.
Hogan submitted 1,855 signatures, and Majok submitted 1,691, both exceeding the 1,000-signature requirement for Democrats. Owens had already submitted her petitions on Monday, with a total of 2,952 signatures, nearly three times the required amount. According to syracuse.com, Hogan secured the endorsement of the Onondaga County Democratic Committee in February.
Babilon, the only Republican candidate, submitted 612 signatures, surpassing the 500 needed for the Republican line. As reported by WSYR-TV, the deadline for submitting petitions is Thursday (April 3).
Other Democratic candidates, including Jimmy Oliver and Alfonso Davis, are expected to submit their petitions by the deadline. However, the submission of petitions does not guarantee a spot on the ballot, as signatures can be challenged.
The primary election is scheduled for Tuesday, June 24, with early voting from Saturday, June 14, to Sunday, June 22. The general election in November will determine who will succeed Mayor Ben Walsh, who is leaving office due to term limits.
