Syracuse University has announced that former basketball star Carmelo Anthony will deliver the commencement address for the Class of 2025 on Sunday, May 11, at the JMA Wireless Dome. Anthony's basketball career began at Syracuse, where he averaged 22.2 points and 10 rebounds per game as a freshman. His outstanding performance earned him the title of NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player after the Orange defeated Kansas in the national championship game. Following his successful college season, Anthony was drafted third overall by the Denver Nuggets in the 2003 NBA Draft.
During his illustrious 19-year NBA career, Anthony played for several teams, including the Nuggets, New York Knicks, and Los Angeles Lakers. He was a 10-time NBA All-Star and won three Olympic gold medals. Anthony is also a finalist for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2025, with the inductees set to be announced soon.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Anthony's return to Syracuse holds personal significance as his son, Kiyan, is set to join the university's men's basketball team in the upcoming season. Syracuse University Chancellor Kent Syverud praised Anthony's lasting influence, stating, "His exceptional talent, relentless work ethic, and athletic excellence are matched by his unwavering commitment to giving back."
