Aunamarie Mahnken, a 12-year-old student from Central Square, remains in critical condition following an accident on Monday (March 31). The incident occurred outside Central Square Middle School on Route 11 when Mahnken was struck by a car while walking home. She was immediately transported to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse for treatment.
The driver involved in the accident, identified as 22-year-old Tyler Anthony Hanlon from Central Square, is cooperating fully with the authorities. According to New York State Police, Hanlon is not expected to face any charges as the investigation continues. The accident happened when Mahnken failed to see the southbound vehicle.
Superintendent Thomas J. Colabufo of the Central Square School District stated that numerous students witnessed the accident. To support those affected, the school is offering counseling services. "Please keep this child in your thoughts and prayers," Colabufo urged the community, as reported by CNY Central.
The New York State Police are leading the investigation and will provide updates as more information becomes available. The community remains hopeful for Mahnken's recovery and is rallying around her family during this difficult time.
