For the first time in 20 years, Centro has expanded its public transit network to include Cortland County. The announcement was made during a press conference on Monday (March 31) by Cortland County officials. Centro, the public transportation system of Central New York, will now provide bus services to residents in the area.

The expansion comes after Cortland County's Agriculture & Environmental Committee approved joining the Central New York Regional Transportation Authority last August. This decision followed an increase in costs by the previous provider, FirstTransit. The new bus routes will offer rides around town and to Syracuse for appointments, employment, and events like the New York State Fair. Additionally, the routes will serve students and staff at SUNY Cortland and Cornell University.

Centro celebrated the launch by offering free rides for the day. According to Centro Deputy Chief Executive Officer Christopher Tuff, "Residents can look forward to safe, reliable, and equitable transportation that will use the latest technologies to make using the bus an easy, convenient, and desirable option." The service aims to provide affordable transportation, with fares reduced to one dollar per ride for city lines and three dollars for commuter services to Cornell University.

For more information on routes and schedules, residents can visit Centro's website.
