Starting today (March 31), construction on the Townline Road Bridge, which connects DeWitt and Salina, will commence. The $7.5 million project aims to replace the existing bridge over the New York State Thruway (I-90), originally built in 1953, with a modern structure. The new bridge will feature increased vertical clearances, a pedestrian sidewalk, and a new safety guiderail.
Approximately 12,400 vehicles travel over the bridge daily. The new structure will increase the clearance on the eastbound lanes from 14 feet three inches to 16 feet seven inches, and on the westbound lanes from 14 feet nine inches to 17 feet three inches, reducing the risk of bridge strikes by overheight vehicles.
Additional improvements include full-depth pavement reconstruction of the approaches on Townline Road, shoulder reconstruction of I-90 under the bridge, and the installation of a snow fence and drainage structures. A 3.8-mile detour will be in place for the duration of the project, which is expected to be completed by fall 2025.
Governor Kathy Hochul emphasized the importance of investing in infrastructure to enhance safety and connectivity. She stated, "This bridge replacement project will improve travel and connectivity in the community and strengthen our transportation network."
Motorists should expect traffic slowdowns and are advised to follow posted detour signs. The project contractor, Tioga Construction Company, Inc., will oversee the construction, which is subject to weather conditions.
