The Syracuse Police Department is actively investigating a shooting incident that occurred on Thursday (March 27) on the city's South Side. According to Syracuse Police Chief Joseph Cecile, a man shot himself in the head in front of police officers on Amherst Avenue following a domestic disturbance. The man is currently in critical condition at Upstate University Hospital.
The incident began with a domestic call at a residence on Weiser Court, where a woman reported that her ex-boyfriend had become physically aggressive and later returned with a gun, firing shots at her door. By the time officers arrived, the man had left the scene but was later located on Amherst Avenue. As officers approached him, he shot himself, according to Syracuse.com.
Despite claims from bystanders that police fired shots, Chief Cecile confirmed that no officers discharged their weapons during the incident. The police department has reviewed body camera footage, which supports this claim. A heavy police presence was noted at the scene, with more than a dozen police cars and a mobile command center present.
The Onondaga County District Attorney, William Fitzpatrick, stated that if the man succumbs to his injuries, the New York State Attorney General’s Office may investigate the incident. The police department is seeking any additional information from the public regarding the incident. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Syracuse Police Department.
