An investigation is underway following the death of Matthew Brown, a 30-year-old man from Oneida County who died while in the custody of the New York State Police. The incident occurred late Monday night (March 24) in Barneveld, after troopers responded to a 911 call reporting erratic behavior at a home on Sand Ridge Road.
Upon arrival, troopers attempted to engage with Brown, who suddenly lunged for a trooper's firearm. The officers were able to restrain and handcuff him without further incident. However, while awaiting the arrival of emergency medical personnel for an evaluation, Brown became unresponsive. Despite immediate lifesaving efforts by troopers, a deputy from the Oneida County Sheriff's Office, and EMS personnel, Brown was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to New York State Police, the New York State Attorney General’s Office has been notified of the death, as required by law when a death involves a police officer. The Attorney General's Office is responsible for investigating deaths that result from actions or inactions of law enforcement officers.
