In Syracuse, Lynzina Sutton was sentenced to two years in prison for assaulting a teacher at Lincoln Middle School. The incident occurred on February 16, 2024, when Sutton posed as a student to enter the school and attacked teacher Meghan Reno. Sutton repeatedly punched Reno, causing a concussion and a broken nose. The attack was motivated by a report Reno made regarding Sutton's child.
During the sentencing on Monday (March 24), Reno addressed the court, describing the profound impact the assault had on her life. She stated, "My classroom, which is supposed to be a safe space for myself and my students, was violated in that moment." Reno had to take medical leave for the rest of the school year and is still attending doctor’s appointments for her injuries. She has since returned to teaching in a different district.
Sutton, who pleaded guilty to second-degree assault, expressed regret through her attorney, Heather Vincent. Vincent noted that Sutton is typically timid and shy and has accepted responsibility for her actions. Sutton's attorney highlighted the impact of Sutton's actions on her own children, who will be separated from their mother during her incarceration.
Judge Gordon Cuffy acknowledged Sutton's remorse but emphasized the lasting effects on both Reno and Sutton's children. Superintendent Anthony Davis commended the District Attorney's Office for its work on the case, stressing the importance of maintaining a safe environment for students and staff. Sutton's additional charges of burglary, harassment, and endangering the welfare of a child were dismissed as part of her plea deal.
CNY Central reported that Sutton will also face two years of post-release supervision following her prison term.
