Police in Syracuse are reviewing security camera footage following a massive fire at the former Maria Regina College campus on the North Side. The blaze, which began Friday (March 21), destroyed much of the historic building's roof and heavily damaged the fourth floor. Firefighters battled the flames for over 24 hours, and officials suspect arson may be involved.
According to Syracuse.com, a person was seen on the campus shortly before the fire started, prompting police to consider the possibility of arson. Police Chief Joseph Cecile noted that people were living in the long-vacant property, which has been a target for vandals and squatters.
The building, once known as The Motherhouse of St. Anthony’s Convent, is part of a redevelopment plan to convert the campus into apartments for low-income seniors. Despite the fire, plans to develop the site continue, with 154 units still possible in other buildings on the campus.
Mayor Ben Walsh criticized the property owner, Mark Congel, for neglecting the site, which the Sisters of St. Francis sold to him a decade ago. Congel, who was in Florida at the time of the fire, is returning to Syracuse to assess the damage.
Fire Chief Michael Monds confirmed that the fire department's response was not hindered by recent water pressure issues in the city. The investigation continues as officials analyze footage from various security cameras, including those installed by the contractor, Hueber-Breuer Construction Co., and nearby residents.
