The New York State Police (NYSP) announced the results of their annual St. Patrick's Day enforcement initiative, which ran from Friday (March 14) through Monday (March 17). During this period, state troopers issued 11,582 tickets and made 239 arrests for driving while intoxicated (DWI). This year's campaign was extended by one day compared to 2024's initiative, resulting in a significant increase in both tickets and arrests.

The enforcement campaign, funded by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, utilized sobriety checkpoints, additional DWI patrols, and details targeting underage drinking and sales to minors. Troopers also focused on ticketing distracted drivers using handheld electronic devices. According to NYSP, the crackdown led to the investigation of 563 crashes, none of which resulted in fatalities.

In comparison to the previous year, the 2024 campaign resulted in 8,662 tickets and 217 DWI arrests. The increase in enforcement efforts this year led to more than 11,000 tickets being issued statewide for various traffic violations, including speeding and distracted driving. Notably, Troop D, covering the Mohawk Valley and surrounding areas, reported the most tickets issued in a single area, with 1,298 tickets.

The NYSP's initiative highlights the ongoing efforts to enhance road safety and reduce impaired driving incidents across New York State. As reported by WWNY, the crackdown serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible driving, especially during holiday celebrations.
