The National Weather Service has issued a fire weather watch for parts of Central New York, effective today (March 19) from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. This watch covers areas mainly south and east of Syracuse. The alert is due to gusty winds and low humidity levels, which increase the risk of brush fires spreading rapidly.

According to WSYR-TV, winds are expected to reach 20 to 30 mph, with humidity levels dropping to between 20 and 30 percent. These conditions create a high potential for fires to grow quickly if they start.

Meteorologist Peter Hall from CNY Central warns that the combination of strong winds, low humidity, and warm temperatures can lead to rapid fire growth. Residents are advised to avoid outdoor burning, as a statewide burn ban is in effect until May 14.

Authorities urge people to report any fires immediately and to refrain from discarding cigarettes or matches outdoors. The community is encouraged to stay informed by checking local news updates and weather alerts.
