Syracuse University has announced the establishment of a new regional development office aimed at leveraging the upcoming Micron Technology chipmaking complex in Clay. The office will be led by a newly appointed vice president and will focus on fostering collaboration between students, faculty, and private companies, including Micron, to conduct joint research and develop a curriculum tailored for the semiconductor industry.
The initiative comes as Micron plans to begin construction on the first of several chip fabrication plants at the White Pine Commerce Park later this year. Micron's project in Central New York is seen as a significant economic opportunity, with plans to build up to four fabrication plants over the next 20 years at a total cost of $100 billion. The company has secured $4.6 billion in grants and could access up to $15 billion more in federal, state, and local tax breaks.
