The Syracuse Roman Catholic Diocese has announced the closure of Bishop Grimes Junior-Senior High School. The school will merge with Bishop Ludden in Geddes, creating a new institution named Bishop Ludden/Grimes. This decision, driven by enrollment challenges and financial sustainability concerns, will take effect at the end of the 2024-2025 school year, with the new school opening in the fall of 2025.

Bishop Grimes' closure follows a period of speculation and concern among students and staff. According to LocalSYR, the Diocese confirmed the closure in a letter sent to the community, emphasizing the need to consolidate resources to maintain a vibrant Catholic educational experience. Danielle Cummings, Chancellor of the Diocese, acknowledged the emotional impact of the decision, stating, "Two buildings just don’t make sense. Two full staffs don’t make sense."

CNY Central reported that the decision was not made lightly, as the Diocese faces increasing costs and declining enrollment. In 2002, Bishop Grimes had 611 students, but by 2022, enrollment had dropped to 278. Parents and students expressed frustration over the lack of communication, feeling blindsided by the announcement.

The new Bishop Ludden/Grimes school will accommodate grades seven through 12, and students from Bishop Grimes are guaranteed spots at the new location. However, faculty and staff positions will be evaluated based on educational needs and seniority. The Diocese plans to hold information meetings for parents, faculty, and staff soon, though specific dates have not been announced.
