Drivers on Interstate 81 southbound in Syracuse should prepare for delays due to a lane closure. The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) has announced that the highway will be reduced to one lane between Exits 23A-23B-22 and Exit 20. This closure will occur on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is expected to last until Wednesday (March 5).
The lane reduction is part of the ongoing efforts to remove the Spencer Street Bridge abutment and retaining wall, which is a component of the larger $2.25 billion I-81 Viaduct Project. This project aims to replace the elevated viaduct in downtown Syracuse with a community grid.
As reported by Syracuse.com, the construction zone is located near Destiny USA, between Hiawatha Boulevard/Destiny USA Drive/Bear Street and Franklin Street/West Street. The NYSDOT advises drivers to stay informed about construction updates through their app.
The lane closure is part of a significant infrastructure project that aims to improve traffic flow and safety in the area. Drivers are encouraged to plan their routes accordingly and expect potential delays during the construction period.
