The New York State Department of Transportation (NYS DOT) is alerting motorists in Cicero about a long-term lane closure that starts today (Monday, February 24). South Bay Road will be closed to southbound traffic from East Pine Grove Road to the South Bay Road Bridge until October 31. This closure is part of the Interstate 81 Viaduct Project, which involves demolishing the existing bridge to construct a new, longer one.
While the southbound lane is closed, the northbound lane will remain open. Motorists are advised to follow posted detours, which direct southbound traffic north on South Bay Road, then south on Thompson Road, south on Northern Boulevard, north on Interstate 481, to Exit 10 (Circle Drive/North Syracuse), and east on Circle Drive back to South Bay Road.
A temporary traffic signal will be installed at the northbound and southbound approaches of the South Bay Road Bridge to manage traffic flow. First responders will have access to a preemption system to clear the bridge of all traffic, ensuring they can cross safely.
The NYS DOT reminds drivers to pay attention to all traffic control devices, including signs and flaggers, and to drive responsibly in work zones. Construction activities are weather-dependent and subject to change based on conditions. Fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone, and multiple violations could result in license suspension.
