Thomas Babilon, a former attorney at Syracuse City Hall, has been chosen by the GOP as their candidate for the upcoming mayoral race in Syracuse. Babilon, 53, worked in the corporation counsel office for about a decade before leaving in 2018 to focus on family court appeals. He currently provides legal aid to low-income individuals in Onondaga County through Hiscock Legal Aid.

Babilon previously ran in the Republican primary for mayor four years ago. In a recent Facebook post reported by Spectrum News 1, he expressed his enthusiasm for the nomination, stating, "Tonight I am proud to accept the Republican nomination for the Mayor of the City of Syracuse. Let's do this."

Babilon's campaign will focus on reducing the tax burden on residents, enhancing public safety, and upholding ethical values. Current Mayor Ben Walsh, an independent, is unable to seek re-election due to term limits, with his term ending at the end of the year. Babilon's candidacy adds to the competitive political landscape in Syracuse, where several candidates are vying for the mayoral position.

The election is expected to draw significant attention as the city continues to address various challenges, including a housing crisis.
