Work is set to begin soon on a $33.6 million project to replace the aging bridge on U.S. Route 11 over the Oneida River in Brewerton. This bridge connects Onondaga and Oswego counties and serves about 13,000 motorists daily. The project aims to enhance safety and reliability for the community.
The current bridge, first constructed in the early 20th century, last underwent significant rehabilitation in 1986. The new bridge will feature modern design elements, including eight-foot shoulders for emergency vehicles and five-foot sidewalks for pedestrians and cyclists. It will also be New York State's first gussetless truss bridge, designed to improve durability and reduce maintenance costs.
Governor Kathy Hochul emphasized the importance of this project, stating, "The Route 11 bridge over the Oneida River in Brewerton is a pivotal connection that we must maintain." The project is expected to be completed by early 2027, with traffic moving to a temporary bridge by fall 2026.
Local officials, including Cicero Town Supervisor Michael A. Aregano, praised the initiative, highlighting its potential to strengthen community ties and support economic growth. The bridge's proximity to Interstate 81 also provides easy access to Syracuse and surrounding areas, making it a vital link for residents and visitors.
