Syracuse, N.Y. - More trouble for the Syracuse Academy of Science High school
Tuesday afternoon, Firefighters responded to the Park Avenue school for a carbon monoxide alarm going off.
They quickly determined there was no CO detected, and it wasn't a CO alarm.
Staff admitted a combination alarm in the kitchen went off because of burnt food. Firefighters found a combination alarm on a desk in the kitchen, with several pieces of tape covering several openings. School officials and kitchen staff admitted they removed the alarm from the wall and put a new one up just before Firefighters arrived. That detector was tested by fire crews at the scene and was confirmed to function normally.
Chief Michael Mounds says that tampering with a life-safety device, and failing to maintain a life-safety system, are violations of the 2020 Fire Code of New York State, the 2020 Property Maintenance Code of New York State and the City of Syracuse Property Conservation Code
The school will be charged with those code violations.
