An electrical malfunction is being blamed for a house fire in Syracuse, New York, that displaced five people early Monday (February 3). The fire occurred at 1004 Turtle Street on the city's North Side. According to Capt. Phillip Vogt of the Syracuse Fire Department, the fire started in the attic due to an accidental electrical malfunction. Firefighters arrived at the scene around 12:30 a.m. and observed smoke and flames coming from the upper windows of the house. It took crews approximately 40 minutes to extinguish the blaze. Fortunately, all five occupants, including two adults and three children, were able to evacuate safely, and no injuries were reported. However, the home sustained significant damage, particularly to the roof and attic.

According to Syracuse.com, the fire department emphasized the importance of having working smoke detectors in homes. Deputy Chief Elton Davis stated, "One of the most important items you can have in your home these days is a working smoke detector."

The fire department is continuing to investigate the incident to confirm the cause of the fire.
