Syracuse Budget Director Tim Rudd has been placed on paid administrative leave amid an investigation into possible violations of city policies. The city confirmed the decision, which was made by outside counsel, but did not specify the nature of the alleged violations. Rudd, who switched his political affiliation from Democrat to Republican, announced his candidacy for mayor on January 16. He plans to leave his budget director position in March to focus on his campaign.

Rudd, who previously served on the Syracuse Common Council, has been a vocal critic of the current administration's handling of a payroll modernization project. He released a video accusing city officials of mismanaging the project and involving a pass-through company in contract awards. Rudd told Central Current that he was surprised by the leave decision and is unaware of any specific allegations against him. He is also prohibited from contacting colleagues at City Hall.

Mayor Ben Walsh stated that he is willing to work with whoever is in the budget director role to complete the city's 2025 budget. The investigation is ongoing, and further updates are expected.
