The Syracuse Police Department is investigating a security incident that affected its computer network. Discovered on Tuesday (January 28), the department has suspended the use of all systems as a precautionary measure. It remains unclear if the incident was a ransomware attack, similar to those that have targeted law enforcement agencies nationwide.

A spokesperson for the department stated, "We are taking action to restore access to our systems securely. Our investigation is ongoing and access to our network will be limited while we introduce additional security measures" according to CNY Central. The extent of the damage is still being assessed, and it is uncertain how this incident might affect data related to police officers and the public.

Paul Marco of Talas Security explained, "If you have the opportunity to take things down, that's the first step because you have to get the attacker off the network. Once you're off the network, you can start to restore your services and figure out what the damage really was" as reported by CNY Central.

The incident may also impact the Onondaga County Sheriff's Department, as the county shares some databases with the Syracuse Police. The investigation is ongoing, and the department plans to implement additional security measures to prevent future incidents.
