The number of flu cases in Central New York continues to rise, according to the latest data from the New York State Department of Health. During the week ending January 18, Onondaga County reported the highest number of infections with 504 cases. Oneida County followed with 209 cases, and Oswego County reported 127 cases.

The flu season has seen widespread activity across New York State, with more than 31 of the state's 62 counties reporting increased or sustained numbers of lab-confirmed cases. As of the latest reports, there have been 5,818 hospitalizations due to influenza statewide, with 2,206 occurring in the past week. There have also been two influenza-associated pediatric deaths reported last week.

Health experts emphasize the importance of getting vaccinated to reduce the risk of serious illness. The flu vaccine is available for individuals six months and older, and it is especially recommended for those at higher risk, such as young children, older adults, and people with chronic medical conditions.

In addition to vaccination, practicing good hygiene, such as washing hands frequently and avoiding touching the face, can help prevent the spread of the flu. The New York State Department of Health has also launched a campaign to encourage vaccinations against flu, COVID-19, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), particularly for children and older adults.

For those seeking flu vaccinations, a list of immunization clinics is available at vaccines.gov. The state health department continues to update the NYS Flu Tracker with the latest information on flu cases and hospitalizations.
