A fire early Sunday morning (January 26) displaced two people from their home on Syracuse's West Side. The Syracuse Fire Department responded to the blaze at 249 Rockland Avenue shortly after 5 a.m. Firefighters encountered flames coming from the second floor of the two-and-a-half-story house, which quickly spread after several windows broke, allowing the fire to grow.

According to Capt. Phillip Vogt, a spokesperson for the Syracuse Fire Department, the fire was caused by an electrical hot plate that came into contact with bedding in a second-floor bedroom. Crews battled high heat and low visibility conditions, taking about an hour to fully extinguish the fire.

Two residents had evacuated the home before the firefighters arrived and were treated for minor injuries at local hospitals. The house sustained significant fire, smoke, and water damage, leaving the residents displaced.

The fire department continues to investigate the incident. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact local authorities.
