The family of Robert Brooks has filed a federal lawsuit following his death at Marcy Correctional Facility in Oneida County. Brooks, 43, died on December 10, 2024, after being allegedly beaten by multiple correction officers. The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Utica, names the state corrections department and several officers as defendants. It accuses them of using excessive force and being indifferent to Brooks' medical needs.
According to the Times Union, the incident was captured on body cameras, showing officers punching and kicking Brooks, who was handcuffed. The footage also reveals officers lifting him by the neck. Brooks was taken to a hospital but died hours later. Preliminary medical findings suggest asphyxia due to neck compression as a potential cause of death.
Governor Kathy Hochul has called for the termination of the employees involved and appointed a new leader for the prison. The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages and highlights a history of abuse at the facility. Brooks' family, including his son, Robert Brooks Jr., and brother, Jared Ricks, are advocating for justice and systemic change.
The case is under investigation by the Office of Special Investigations, and Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick has been appointed as a special prosecutor. The investigation continues, with the family hoping for accountability and reform.
