Syracuse Hancock International Airport experienced its busiest year in 2024, with over three million passengers passing through its gates. This milestone marks a 5% increase from the previous record of 2.9 million travelers in 2023, according to the Syracuse Regional Airport Authority (SRAA). The record was achieved despite Southwest Airlines ceasing operations at the airport in August, which accounted for approximately 12% of the airport's traffic at the time.
SRAA Executive Director Jason Terreri commented on the achievement, stating, "This record-breaking traffic signals the strength of the demand in our market and reinforces that SYR has become the preferred airport for our region." He also noted that the increase in traffic occurred even before the anticipated rise in semiconductor-related travel due to Micron's upcoming operations in Clay.
The airport's eight airline partners have increased flight frequencies and introduced larger planes to accommodate the growing demand, helping to fill the gap left by Southwest Airlines. Syracuse.com reported that the airport's success highlights its importance as a regional travel hub.
Officials expect continued growth in passenger numbers as new business developments in the area take off.
