Officials in Syracuse, New York, are awaiting autopsy results to determine the cause of death of a night cleaner found at the Syracuse Academy of Science on Tuesday (January 7). The man's body was discovered in the school's cafeteria on Park Avenue. Emergency crews responding to the scene detected high levels of carbon monoxide, prompting the evacuation of the building.

A carbon monoxide detector attached to emergency equipment alerted responders to elevated gas levels. Five individuals were treated for symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning, which was traced to a food warmer in the kitchen. However, officials believe the cleaner's death is unrelated to the gas leak.

The Syracuse Fire Department and the City Division of Code Enforcement inspected the building and found that carbon monoxide alarms were not present in the cafeteria or kitchen. The school must remain closed until additional alarms are installed and kitchen equipment is certified safe.

The school administration stated that the deceased was a valued employee who had worked there for over three years. They extended condolences to his family and assured the public of their commitment to safety.

The Syracuse Police Department is investigating the incident but does not suspect foul play. The school plans to provide more information as it becomes available.
