The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) has announced the temporary closure of the on-ramp from Sunset Avenue to Interstate 81 northbound in Syracuse. Beginning today (January 7), the ramp will be closed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily through Friday (January 10). This closure is part of the ongoing I-81 Viaduct Project and is necessary for the removal of the Bear Street Bridge abutment and retaining wall.
Motorists are advised to follow the signed detour, which directs traffic north on Sunset Avenue, east on Bear Street, and north on Lodi Street to access I-81 northbound. The construction schedule is weather-dependent and subject to change.
The NYSDOT emphasizes the importance of driving responsibly in work zones, reminding drivers that fines are doubled for speeding in these areas. For real-time travel information, motorists can call 511, visit 511NY.org, or download the 511NY mobile app.
The ramp closure will also occur from Monday (January 13) through Friday (January 17) during the same hours. The I-81 Viaduct Project aims to improve transportation infrastructure and safety in the region.
