Central New York is set to welcome a new congressman as Democrat John Mannion is sworn into the U.S. House of Representatives today (January 3). Mannion, a former state senator, defeated Republican incumbent Brandon Williams in a closely watched race last November. He will represent New York's 22nd Congressional District, which includes Madison, Onondaga, and parts of Cayuga, Cortland, and Oneida counties.
Mannion, who has a background as a public school science teacher and labor leader, is eager to serve at the federal level. He emphasized the importance of checks and balances in government and expressed his commitment to moving the country and the region forward.
Mannion is one of 61 new members being sworn into the 119th Congress in Washington, D.C. today. The swearing-in ceremony, presided over by Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, marks the beginning of Mannion's two-year term. Despite the Democratic win in the 22nd District, Republicans will maintain control of the House and have gained a three-seat majority in the Senate for the first time in four years.
