Route 31 Reopens After Barn Fire in Clay

Route 31 in Clay is open again for the morning commute after a barn fire caused its closure on Sunday (December 22). The fire occurred near Caughdenoy Road, with smoke visible from miles away. When first responders arrived, part of the structure had already collapsed. Crews worked to clear ice that formed as they battled the flames. Multiple fire departments were called to the scene, but no injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, according to CNY Central.

The road closure lasted several hours as crews ensured the area was safe for travel. LocalSYR reported that the fire was fully involved when the Clay Fire Department arrived at 3:49 p.m. The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
