The Jamesville-DeWitt Central School District has approved a $34.5 million capital improvement project. On Tuesday (December 17), voters overwhelmingly supported the plan with 231 votes in favor and 48 against. The project aims to enhance safety, update infrastructure, and improve athletic facilities without increasing taxes for residents.
The district will finance the project through a combination of retiring debt and $1 million from a capital reserve fund. Additionally, New York State will provide building aid covering 76.3% of the project costs over 15 years. Superintendent Peter Smith expressed gratitude to the community, stating, "We appreciate everyone who took the time to make it to the polls."
The project includes upgrades to school hallways and bathrooms, enhancing the learning environment. It also involves improvements to athletic facilities, such as a new Varsity baseball complex at Lyndon Field and updates to gymnasiums and playgrounds to meet Universal Pre-K guidelines.
Safety enhancements are a priority, with plans to renovate secure vestibule entries and address parking issues at Tecumseh Elementary School. The project aims to support the long-term investment in the district's schools and provide a healthier, more welcoming environment for students and staff.
