An investigation is underway to determine the cause of a fire that broke out at a home on Barnes Avenue in Syracuse, New York. The incident occurred on Sunday (December 15) around 4:50 p.m. when the Syracuse Fire Department responded to reports of smoke emanating from a basement bedroom. Firefighters arrived within minutes and managed to extinguish the flames in about 15 minutes, but the house sustained significant smoke, water, and fire damage.

According to Deputy Fire Chief David Munski, the fire was caused by an overheated power tap or surge protector. Eight people, including six adults and two children, were in the house at the time of the fire. Fortunately, all occupants were able to evacuate safely. However, one person suffered smoke inhalation and was transported to the hospital, while another individual was treated on-site for a cut to their hand.

The Central and Northern New York Chapter of the American Red Cross provided assistance to the displaced residents. This fire marks the third structure fire in Syracuse within a 26-hour period, highlighting the need for continued vigilance and safety measures.

The investigation into the fire's cause remains ongoing, as reported by NewsChannel 9. Fire officials are urging residents to be cautious with electrical devices and to ensure that power taps and surge protectors are not overloaded.
