Syracuse University has announced plans to build a new hotel near its campus, aiming to address the need for more accommodation and event space in the area. The proposed hotel will be located at the corner of University Avenue and Harrison Street, featuring approximately 200 rooms, a restaurant, and event facilities. The university expects the hotel to open by the fall of 2027.

The decision follows the recent conversion of the former Sheraton University Hotel into a student dormitory, known as Orange Hall, which accommodates around 400 students. This change, along with the closure of the Crowne Plaza Hotel, has reduced the number of available hotel rooms in the area, raising concerns among local tourism officials.

According to Syracuse.com, the new hotel is part of the university's "comprehensive housing strategy" and is expected to be on the local property tax rolls. Brett Padgett, SU's senior vice president and chief financial officer, stated, "We are confident a new hotel will not only serve our campus community well, it will also further strengthen the University's role as a vibrant and integral part of the City of Syracuse and Onondaga County."

The university is currently in discussions with prominent hotel brands to partner on the project, which is seen as a positive development for the local hospitality industry. Danny Liedka, president of Visit Syracuse, expressed support for the initiative, noting the current shortage of hotel space in the university and medical center area.

The News Syracuse Blog reports that the university is collaborating with Onondaga County leadership to ensure the project aligns with the community's future needs. The next steps include selecting a brand partner and advancing the design, development, and permitting phases, pending approval from the Board of Trustees.
