Freight Train Derailment in East Syracuse Under Investigation

Authorities are investigating a freight train derailment that occurred in East Syracuse, New York. The incident happened behind an address on West Terrace Street on Sunday, December 1, 2024, around 8:30 a.m., according to Onondaga County 911 dispatchers. The train, which was carrying shipping containers, was heading towards the Burnet Avenue bridge when about seven of its cars derailed. One of the derailed cars was carrying two large containers that were seen leaning off the track. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the incident.

Workers were seen attempting to get the cars back on the tracks, but as of 9:30 a.m., the train was still derailed. The cause of the derailment is still under investigation. Syracuse.com has reached out to CSX Transportation, the company operating the train, for more information.
