Construction projects are set to begin today on both Interstate 481 and Interstate 81 in Syracuse, New York. According to the New York State Department of Transportation, I-481 south will be reduced to one lane between the I-690 east interchange with I-481 and Exit 3E from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. today and tomorrow for overhead sign inspections.
Additionally, slowdown operations will commence tonight on I-81 north and south between Exits 23A-23B-22 and Exit 18. These operations, which involve reducing traffic to one lane and periodically slowing traffic, will last from 6 p.m. until 6 a.m. through Wednesday. The slowdowns are necessary to facilitate the removal of steel beams from the Bear Street bridge as part of the Interstate 81 Viaduct Project.
Motorists are advised to exercise caution when traveling through the work zone and to pay attention to all traffic control devices, including signs and flaggers. The Department of Transportation also reminds drivers that fines are doubled for speeding in work zones, and multiple speeding violations could result in the suspension of a driver's license. The New York State Department of Transportation has stated that all construction activities are weather-dependent and subject to change based on conditions.
