Oneida And Madison Counties Suffer Severe Damage From Tuesday's Storms

Canastota, N.Y. - Severe storms moved through Central New York Tuesday leaving broken power lines, downed trees, buildings damaged and one person dead.

In Rome in Oneida County, there was severe damage including trees that hit homes and roofs that were ripped off of churches. Luckily no serious injuries.

 The National Weather Service has confirmed that it was a tornado that touched down in Rome Tuesday afternoon.

Canastota in Madison County was also severely damaged and one person died. 82 year old Robert Popple of Main Street, Canastota was found dead immediately following the storm. Officials believe he was struck by debris as he tried to cover up his Classic Car.

Barlow street in the Village of Canastota was hit hard. There is still a State of Emergency in effect for the Village of Canastota. Barlow Street, Main Street between Center Street and James Street and Buck Street from Center to Barlow Street remains closed.

The Canastota VFW on Canal road is open as a shelter for those who need may need assistance.

The Red Cross has food and lodging available at that location.
