Small Fire Near Catholic Diocese Offices Causes Evacuation

Syracuse, N.Y. - Syracuse Fire Department responded to a call this morning at the Catholic Diocese on Montgomery Street.

Around 8:30 crews arrived to find smoke coming from a nearby manhole, and found smoky conditions inside the building. It was quickly determined that a fire in an underground electrical utility vault had extended into the basement of the building.

Utility crews arrived to deal with the electrical equipment as firefighters kept the small fire in the basement from spreading to the rest of the building.

Around 15 people were evacuated from the building and no injuries were reported.
