Albany, N.Y. - Republicans John Katko or Claudia Tenney will be without a seat in the next Congress.
The commission was supposed to remove state lawmakers from their own redistricting process and has failed to reach a consensus on new maps for congressional and legislative districts. That means the state Senate and Assembly will likely draw the maps themselves then run for those offices weeks later.
One thing that the commission's Democrats and Republicans did do was agree to consolidate the congressional districts in Central New York held by Katko and Tenney. The consolidation will also shift the districts in Western New York. Democrat Joe Morelle's Rochester-area district would become slightly larger and would be surrounded by the district now held by Buffalo-area Republican Chris Jacobs.
