Oneida County Sheriffs Warn Of Strange "Assassination" Text Scam

Utica, N.Y. - Oneida County Sheriffs are warning of a very strange phone and text scam

People have been receiving text messages on their phone, from someone who says they have been hired to assassinate them but they have had a change of heart, and would be willing to spare their life if the victim pays them a ransom fee.

In these text messages, personal information such as their actual home addresses is sometimes listed which causes concern to many. It is believed that the personal information was obtained by these scammers through internet searches.

Deputies urge people not to panic if they get one of these messages, and don't click on links or offer any information, instead contact police.
