Syracuse Firefighters Battle Early Morning Blaze On Butternut Street

Syracuse, N.Y. - Syracuse Fire Department called out early this morning to 1000 Butternut St

When crews arrived around 5 am, they found heavy fire in a large mixed-occupancy building, with a convenience store on the first floor and several apartments above.

Only one person was in the apartments, they escaped.

Crews had to fight the fire from outside due to safety concerns as the roof eventually collapsed. More than 50 on-duty firefighters were called to the scene, it took almost four hours to put it out.

Butternut Street was closed between Carbon and Spring Streets. No word on the cause.
