Cuomo Signs Law Ending Long Term Solitary Confinement In Jails

Albany, N.Y. - Governor Cuomo has signed a bill into law that ends long-term solitary confinement for inmates at corrections facilities throughout New York.

Under the new law called the HALT Act, (Humane Alternatives to Long-Term Solitary Confinement Act) solitary confinement will be eliminated for vulnerable prisoners due to physical and mental disabilities.

It also limits the number of days for other prisoners to 15 days.

Pregnant women are also exempt from solitary confinement.
