Syracuse Police Quick Thinking Saves 2-Year-Old From Fire

Syracuse, N.Y. - Some quick thinking by Syracuse Police lead to the rescue of a child.

Police responded to a domestic call where a man and woman were arguing over where their 2-year-old child was.

Despite 33-year-old Jannelle Gerton's claim, she didn't know, police went to her address.

They heard smoke detectors and had difficulty entering the home because the door was locked and items were blocking the windows. They smashed a window, pushed aside a mattress, and found the child inside. The child was treated on scene for minor smoke inhalation.

An investigation revealed that Gerton started a fire in a bathroom, left the house and her child behind.

She is charged with Attempted Arson, Reckless Endangerment, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child
