Otisville, N.Y. - Former New York Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver is heading off to jail today..
The 76 year old Silver reported to a federal prison in Otisville, New York today to begin serving his 6 1/2 year sentence in a corruption case.
Silver was ousted as speaker in 2015 and convicted later that year, but he avoided going to prison for awhile. His conviction in federal court in Manhattan was overturned on appeal before he was convicted again in 2018.
His lawyers had argued that prison would worsen his existing health issues but Judge Valerie Caproni sentenced Silver in July.
