Wegmans Ends Use Of Plastic Bags

Syracuse, N.Y. - Starting today, shoppers will have to bring their own bags when they go to their Wegmans grocery store.

After trials at its stores in Corning and Ithaca, the company is ending its use of plastic bags beginning today. Shoppers can bring their own reusable bags or can buy paper bags from Wegmans for a nickel apiece. Wegmans will also have reusable bags for customers to purchase.

Wegmans officials say that they will donate part of the profits from paper bag sales to the CNY Food Bank.

Beginning March first, a statewide ban on plastic bags takes effect to encourage New Yorkers to use reusable bags.
