Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh Vetoes Pay Raises

Syracuse, N.Y. - Mayor Ben Walsh has vetoed a local law raising salaries for councilors, the auditor and the mayor.

It was Walsh’s first veto in about 2 years as mayor. The council wasted no time in almost immediately overriding the veto so the raises will take effect next year, despite the mayor’s objections. The council approved increasing salaries for councilors from around $21,000 $30,000 earlier this month. The law also locks in annual 2 percent raises for councilors.

Walsh has said he did not ask for a raise, the council has decided to delay the mayor’s raise until the next term.
